How Many Packs Are in a Pokémon Booster Box? Every Sealed Product Counted

“How many packs are in a booster box?” sounds like a question with one answer. In practice it depends on which box you are holding. An English booster display, an Elite Trainer Box, a booster bundle and a Japanese booster box all hold a different number of packs, and the cards per pack are not the same either.

This guide counts the packs in every common sealed Pokémon TCG product, so you know exactly what you are paying for before you open anything.

The short answer

A standard English Pokémon TCG booster box (officially called a Booster Display Box) contains 36 booster packs. Each pack holds 10 cards plus a Basic Energy, so a full box gives you 360 game cards. That has been the standard for main English expansions for years, and it is still the case in the Mega Evolution era: the official Perfect Order Booster Display Box, for example, is listed at 36 packs.

English booster display: 36 packs

The booster display is the bulk format. It contains packs of a single expansion and nothing else: no sleeves, no dice, no promo. That is why it gives you the lowest price per pack at retail and why players chasing a full set, or a specific illustration rare, usually start here.

Each English pack has 10 cards plus a Basic Energy, and a code card for Pokémon TCG Live. Multiply by 36 and a display gives you 360 cards to sort through. Current examples in our shop include the Perfect Order Booster Display (36 packs) and the Phantasmal Flames Booster Display.

Some sets are also sold as an 18-pack half display, such as the Chaos Rising Booster Display with 18 packs. Always check the pack count in the product title. “Display” on its own does not tell you whether you are buying 18 or 36.

Elite Trainer Box: 9 packs (11 at Pokémon Center)

An Elite Trainer Box holds nine booster packs. The rest of the box is accessories: a full-art promo card, 65 card sleeves, a stack of Basic Energy cards, damage-counter dice, a coin-flip die, a plastic coin, a player’s guide and a sturdy storage box with dividers.

The Pokémon Center version, sold through Pokémon Center, has 11 packs instead of nine and two promos, one of them stamped with the Pokémon Center logo. Because they are harder to get in Europe, Pokémon Center ETBs often sell for well above the price of a regular ETB. You can compare both in our Elite Trainer Box category.

Booster Bundle: 6 packs

A booster bundle is simply six booster packs of one set in a sealed sleeve. It is a good middle ground if you want more than a single pack but do not need a full display or the ETB accessories. Most modern sets have one, for example the Perfect Order Booster Bundle or the Pitch Black Booster Bundle.

Special sets have no booster box

This catches a lot of people out. Special or “mini” expansions such as 151, Prismatic Evolutions or the 2026 30th Celebration set are usually not released as an English booster display at all. Their packs only come inside collection products: ETBs, bundles, tins and premium collections.

If you search for a “30th Celebration booster box” in English, you will not find an official one. The only sealed 30th Celebration display is the Japanese M6a display. Our guide to the M6a display vs the Ultra-Premium Collection explains the difference.

How many booster boxes are in a case?

A sealed English booster box case contains six booster displays, which is 216 packs or 2,160 game cards. Cases are mainly bought by stores, breakers and long-term sealed collectors. For most players a single display is plenty.

Japanese booster boxes are different

Japanese boxes work on another system. A standard Japanese main-set box has 30 packs of 5 cards, so 150 cards in total. High-class sets are often 10-pack boxes with more cards per pack, and some subsets come in 20-pack boxes. We break this down in detail in How many packs are in a Japanese Pokémon booster box?.

Which product should you buy?

  • You want to open as many packs as possible for the money: a 36-pack booster display.
  • You want packs plus sleeves, dice and a storage box: an Elite Trainer Box.
  • You want to try a new set without a big spend: a 6-pack booster bundle or a blister.
  • You want something to keep sealed: a display or a Pokémon Center ETB of a popular set. See our list of out-of-print booster boxes for how older displays have developed.
