How Many Packs Are in a Japanese Pokémon Booster Box? 30, 20 and 10-Pack Boxes Explained

If you are used to English Pokémon booster boxes, Japanese boxes can be confusing. An English display almost always has 36 packs. A Japanese box can have 30, 20 or just 10 packs, and the number of cards in each pack changes too. The box is also much smaller, which surprises a lot of first-time buyers.

This guide explains the different Japanese booster box formats, how to tell which one you are looking at, and how to compare them with English boxes.

Japanese booster box formats at a glance

Box typePacks per boxCards per packExamples

30th Celebration (M6a)206 (incl. 1 Basic Energy)30th Celebration
High Class Pack1010VMAX Climax, Shiny Star V

For comparison, a standard English booster display has 36 packs with 10 game cards each.

Standard 30-pack boxes

Most Japanese main expansions come in a box of 30 packs with 5 cards per pack, so 150 cards per box. Packs are cheaper than English packs, and the smaller pack size means each pack opens faster. Japanese packs do not include code cards or Basic Energy filler, so almost every card in the pack is a card from the set.

Examples in our shop include Abyss Eye (M5), Clay Burst, Cyber Judge, Ancient Roar, Night Wanderer and Glory of Team Rocket.

20-pack special set boxes

Some special sets come in smaller boxes with bigger packs. Pokémon Card 151 and the Black Bolt and White Flare sets, for example, use 20 packs of 7 cards.

The 30th Celebration (M6a) box released on 16 September 2026 is also a 20-pack box. Each pack has 6 cards, one of which is a Basic Energy, and every pack includes one of 30 different Pikachu cards. We compare it with the English Ultra-Premium Collection in a separate guide.

High Class Pack boxes (10 packs)

High Class Packs are premium sets with only 10 packs per box, but 10 cards per pack. They are packed with holo and full-art cards and are popular with collectors. Well-known examples are VMAX Climax and Shiny Star V. Because there are so few packs per box, the box price is higher relative to its size than a standard 30-pack box.

The product name does not tell you the pack count

This is the most important point. Japanese boxes use the same word for “expansion pack” on 30-pack, 20-pack and smaller boxes, so you cannot tell the format from the name alone. Before you buy, check the pack count on the listing or the side of the box. In our shop the pack count is in the product name, for example “30 Display” or “Display of 10”.

Japanese vs English boxes: what is the better buy?

  • Price per box: Japanese boxes are usually cheaper than English boxes from the same era, but you also get fewer cards.
  • Card quality: many collectors prefer Japanese print quality and centring.
  • Pull experience: Japanese boxes are known for more consistent hit rates per box than English displays.
  • Play: outside Japan, official tournaments generally do not allow Japanese cards. For collecting and casual play this does not matter.

We go deeper into this in English vs Japanese Pokémon cards.

Shrink wrap and resealed boxes

Japanese boxes are normally sold in tight factory shrink wrap. Some boxes reach the market “no shrink”: factory sealed, but with the outer film removed somewhere in distribution. A missing shrink is not automatically a fake, but it does make a box harder to verify. Learn what to check in our guide on how to spot a fake or resealed Japanese booster box.

Frequently asked questions

How many packs are in a Japanese Pokémon booster box?

Most Japanese main-set boxes have 30 packs of 5 cards. Special sets often have 20 packs (for example 151 with 7 cards per pack, or 30th Celebration with 6), and High Class Pack boxes have 10 packs of 10 cards.

A standard Japanese pack has 5 cards. Some special sets use 6 or 7 cards per pack, and High Class Packs have 10.

20 packs. Each pack has 6 cards, including one Basic Energy and one of 30 different Pikachu cards.

Why is a Japanese booster box so small?
